  Pit Stop (2)

2025 On Sunday (2 November) we were able to bless so many people at the Unofficial pit stop

We had 177 visitor vehicles in the end, with the peak running later than in past years. The car park was still almost full at 10.15, but was just empty enough for the congregation to start parking at 10.30am. By 11am there were just 2 broken down cars.

Apparently Christ Church is in the official drivers briefing notes, in spite of being an unofficial stop. No wonder we are getting so popular, but a great opportunity.

“Just a note to say thank you for your hospitality yesterday, it's always appreciated!
So please say thank you to the whole team on behalf of a grateful driver and his passengers!
Kind regards, Julian.”

“Dear All. Yesterday morning I was just one of hundreds of LBVCR participants who called in at your Church for a very, very welcome ‘stop’.
You have no idea how welcome a sight it is to see all your team of helpers guiding us into the carpark with a cheery welcome and the offer of refreshments to warm us up and give us the opportunity to stretch our legs.
Thank you all so much for your hospitality, hard work, prayers and wishes for a safe onward journey to Brighton.  We appreciate it enormously and the bacon ‘butties’ are delicious! I hope to see you all on November 1st next year.
God bless. Yours David G”

"Just a note to thank you for your welcome, hot drinks, food and facilities on the Veteran Car run on Sunday.
It made a huge difference as we were very wet and cold!
With Best wishes John & Julia H"

"Thank you for hosting us. We were visiting from Wilmington NC USA. When we walked in Firm Foundation was being sung. It was a blessing to hear abd the food was great! Jennifer"

"Good evening. Has it been a week already; how time flies!
We wanted to write and say thank you for your generous hospitality. We have done the run several times and this year we decided to stop at Purley. What a lovely atmosphere. Everyone made us so welcome, we will definitely stop again next year.
Please pass on our sincere thanks to all volunteers who made our stop off so comfortable.
With our very best wishes David and Helen B"

 CHRIST CHURCH PURLEY-2

London to Brighton Veteran Car Run from approximately 7.30am in the church car park.

We are an unofficial pit stop but look forward to welcoming cars, people and spectators.

Watch the cars getting topped up with water and the passengers and drivers having a break…

We shall be blessing the people on the veteran car run with bacon sandwiches and hot drinks.

We will also be welcoming spectators who enjoy being able to get close to these old cars.

Please note that there will only be parking for the Veteran cars in the church car park

In 2024

We had 146 veteran vehicles, including penny farthing cyclists, which is the highest so far.

"I was one of those who accompanied the cars on the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run today and, thanks to your kind hospitality, enjoyed a lovely cup of tea which was really boosted by hearing the band singing "You're a good, good Father". As a result of accompanying the run, I wasn't able to be in church this morning (I'm very pleased to say that I was this evening) but hearing the lovely singing went a long way to compensate for that! Thank you so much. It was really appreciated."

In 2023:

We counted 135 vehicles, including veteran pedal cycles.

Many thanks to everyone who supplied us all with tea and bacon sandwiches today.  We all had a wonderful time at the church.  It is such a welcome, friendly, well organised stop for us all, whatever the weather.  I hope you all got to meet Andy Green the current Land speed Record holder who had popped in for refreshments.
We are all looking forward to next year. P

Dear All
Just a brief note to thank you for your hospitality on Sunday – your provision of a hot drink,  a bacon sandwich and the use of the ‘loos’  is so very welcome after a very early start on a cold morning !
At least this year we didn’t come into the Church dripping wet !
We shall hopefully see you again next year and thank you again
With very best wishes. D

Thank you so very much to all the wonderful people we saw at the church last Sunday.  We SO look forward to our stop each year and to receiving such a great, warm welcome.  The bacon butties and hot coffee are very very gratefully received - as is the comfort break!
We hope you raised a substantial amount for your funds and look forward to seeing you again next year.
With kind regards. S & D

“I’m just getting in touch to thank you all very much for putting on such a great effort on Sundays run.
It was mine and my passengers maiden run and we didn’t know that your stop existed until my brother pointed it out as we came up to the church! And we’re so glad we stopped.
So I just wanted to say a big thanks to the whole team who were most hospitable to us and helped make our run even more amazing!” H.

In 2022:

Thank you to everyone who welcomed our visitors at a rather wet Veteran Car run 2022 – 100 visiting vehicles, including 3 Victorian pedal cycles. A whole team made this possible and all the visitors said how welcoming it was and that we are the best pit stop!

Some of the comments we received:
"As someone on the run, I'd like to say a huge thanks to all at Christ Church. It was our first time and a most welcome surprise to happen upon you."

"I thoroughly recommend popping over to the "pit stop" at the church, we did this the year before Covid and it was joyous."

"I just wanted to thank you and everyone at the Church for the refreshments and respite from the rain on Sunday.  I cannot tell you how welcome it was and I know everyone was so, so grateful to be able to come in for your hospitality.
I do hope we didn't leave too much of a mess and drips everywhere.  What awful weather it was."

"As usual, your community was exceptionally welcoming. I cannot tell you how welcome your stop always is in our primitive cars, not least on a day as wet and cold as Sunday was!"

"I was a very, very wet participant on the London to Brighton Run, driving a red Albion car with my friend.  We dribbled our way across your floor and were so very pleased to take on a bacon bap (special gluten-free for me, thanks, ladies!) and drink a cuppa, then use your facilities.

Apologies for the damp floors we left behind; it was some effort that you went to on our behalf.  I do hope that you enjoyed having us along.  Your congregation were demonstrating true Christian values of welcome and inclusion, with food for all."

Planning your Visit

Welcome to Christ Church Purley

 Untitled design(21)

The following information is aimed initially at those planning a visit but is useful for anyone visiting Christ Church Purley for the first time on a Sunday.

Where and When
We meet at Christ Church Purley (click here for directions). For our Sunday Services starting at 8:45am and 10:15am, for your first visit, we recommend arriving 15 minutes early to help you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will be wearing a Welcome lanyard and will be happy to help.

We serve tea and coffee between the first and second services from 9:45am and then after the service at 11:30am. It is a great way to meet people, or simply take time to find your bearings. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are disabled toilets off of the Foyer.

Our Services
Our 8:45am Service is traditional in style with Holy Communion, liturgy and hymns on an organ. You will be lead through the service throughout by the leader.

The 10:15am service is relaxed in style and led by a band. It is broadcast online and past services can be watched here. It begins with a warm welcome from one of our team and opening prayer. We typically have two or three songs and notices lasting approximately 15 minutes.

At 10:30am the children and young people leave for their groups. A speaker will give a talk that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday lives after which there is usually a song and a led-prayers. One of our leaders will share news and notices, usually about what is going on in the life of the church and we then finish with a final worship song and blessing.

Every second Sunday of the month we share Holy Communion and the children and young people return to join as a whole church family otherwise parents will pick up their children at 11:30am.

On the first Sunday of the month at 10:15am we all worship together in a Worship for Everyone service, with round tables and activities.

Third service:  This is a extended worship and word service led by a band and happens at 11.45am on the first and second Sundays of the month.

Gospel Service: On the last Sunday of each month at 6:30pm, an informal service of worship and word in the Foyer space.

Children and teenagers
We have a great programme lined up for children of all ages:

Stay & Play (Pre-school years). Parents/carers remain and join in with the fun
Kids 1 (5-7 years)
Kids 2 (8-11 years)
Youth (11-18 years)

Parents register their children aged 5-11 years prior to the start of the service from 10am and stay with their parent or grown-up for the start of the service for the welcome, songs and notices.

The children’s group activities vary depending on the age but usually there are topic-themed activities, games, craft, bible story, music and ministry. Youth fill up on doughnuts whilst discussing how God is relevant to their every-day and those under five, stay and play with their adult whilst enjoying coffee, tea and chatting with other parents. Free-play and themed activities precede an interactive story and song time learning about Scruffy the puppet dog’s latest dilemma and Mr Bible’s always-great advice.

Getting Connected:

Discipleship Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our discipleship groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other through biblical study. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, some morning and some evenings. If you would like to join one we can put you in touch with a discipleship group leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to their group.

Serving and Volunteering
If you want to get involved in the life of the church and community throughout the week, you can sign up to serve on a team.
