Volunteers for Floating Shelter at Christ Church 2019

Setting up: (5.45 – 6.45pm) setting up the shelter. Would suit teen helpers as there would be no contact with guests. Written confirmation of volunteering can be given if you are building up a body of volunteering for, say, Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Reception: (6.45 – 10.30pm) experienced volunteers.  Greeting guests, settling them in.

Kitchen: (6.30 – around 9.30pm) receiving and preparing food which has been delivered to the kitchen by our cooks. Serving, clearing up.

Cooks: Preparing either a savoury or sweet dish for 8 and delivering it to the kitchen before 6.45pm. If you are a baker, cakes are also welcome, this may also suit younger volunteers.

Listener: (6.45 – around 10.30pm) sitting and spending time with our guests. This is for volunteers who have worked previously in the shelter or who have some experience of working with the homeless community.

Overnighting: (10.00 – 6.00am) covering the night hours at the shelter with 3 other volunteers; 2 awake and 2 asleep (with a switch over around 2.00am) once the guests have retired. Previous experience of the shelter desirable but not essential.

Breakfast: (6.00 – 8.00am) preparing and serving breakfast to our guests, packing down the shelter.

Laundry: Collecting a black sack of bed linen to wash and returning it to the church by the following Thursday lunchtime.

Prayer team:  Regularly pray for the shelter and its smooth running, our volunteers and most of all, our guests and their needs.
